Description
The Martin Special 28 Style Adirondack VTS dreadnought acoustic guitar was designed to replicate the cherished tone of Martin's 1930s "Golden Era" using their revolutionary Vintage Tone System. The VTS uses a proprietary process to age a premium Adirondack spruce top to sound decades older, capturing the rich warmth and balance of a vintage instrument. Combined with East Indian rosewood back and sides, the Special 28 Style Adirondack VTS dreadnought produces notes that sing with a clear, articulate treble, robust midrange and controlled low end.
Vintage Tone System Ages the Guitar's Soul
At the heart of the Special 28 Style Adirondack VTS dreadnought is its aged Adirondack spruce top. Using their Vintage Tone System, Martin has developed a way to replicate the patina of time by accelerating the natural aging process. The spruce top is aged to match the moisture content and tonal characteristics of an 80-year-old Martin dreadnought. This proprietary technique gives the new guitar a broken-in voice from day one, with the richness, depth and warmth of an heirloom instrument.
Premium Tonewoods for a Lifetime of Music
To complement the aged spruce top, Martin selected East Indian rosewood for the back and sides. This tonewood combination has been used on Martin dreadnoughts for nearly a century, prized for its articulate highs, punchy midrange and controlled low end. The rosewood's dense grain also provides a durable foundation for the guitar's complex tone, allowing it to open up and mature over years of playing.
Vintage Looks to Match the Vintage Sound
Not only does the Special 28 Style Adirondack VTS dreadnought capture the tone of a vintage Martin, it recreates the esthetics. Aging toner gives the spruce top an amber patina, while the rosette, binding and pickguard are crafted in antique white. These design elements harken back to Martin's Golden Era, completing the vintage experience in both sound and styling.
Modern Playability
While the Special 28 Style Adirondack VTS dreadnought takes its inspiration from the past, it has been built for today's player. The modified low oval neck profile feels familiar and fast. The ebony fingerboard and belly bridge provide a smooth playing surface. Non-scalloped X-bracing optimizes resonance and projection. These contemporary build techniques make this guitar a joy to play, even as its aged tone transports you to another era.
